Global Accessibility Awareness Day

Global Accessibility Awareness Day is an opportunity for people around the world to talk, think, and learn about digital access and inclusion.

Held each year on the third Thursday of May, the day encourages everyone to consider whether websites, apps, online documents, videos, and other digital spaces can be used by people with different disabilities. The idea began with a blog post by web developer Joe Devon and grew into an international movement focused on digital accessibility.

Digital accessibility can affect almost every part of life. People use websites and online services to find information, complete forms, apply for services, book appointments, attend events, study, work, connect with others, and participate in their community.

When digital information is not accessible, people can be excluded.

Accessible digital content may include clear headings, plain language, captions on videos, alternative text for images, readable colour contrast, consistent navigation, keyboard access, and documents that work properly with screen readers.

Accessibility is not only about meeting a technical standard. It is about making sure people can access information, make decisions, and participate independently.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day reminds organisations that accessibility should be considered whenever digital content is created. It also encourages people to listen to the experiences of people with disability and include them when designing and testing digital services.

Small changes can remove significant barriers. By making accessibility part of everyday practice, we can create digital spaces that more people can use confidently and independently.
